Enemies of enterprise

08th January 2011

By Rob Cowan

In a speech in March, prime minister David Cameron identified, among other 'enemies of enterprise', 'the town hall officials who take forever with those planning decisions that can be make or break for a business – and the investment and jobs that go with it'.

Planners are always an easy target: everyone wants the freedom to build what they want (combined with the right to stop their neighbours doing what they want).

What worries me is the town hall officials who may feel under pressure to rush through those planning decisions that can be make or break the quality of a place – and the investment and jobs that go with it.
